L MANDEL
Opening party
“KEEP IT MOVING”
Laila Mandel is a Brooklyn based artist with a passion for mixed media and collaborative work. Coming from a background of community art projects in Los Angeles, L enjoys using found objects such as carboard or crushed metal cans in her work. As she pursues a career in animation, L hopes to translate raw materials like these into an animated format, combining methods such as collage with the modern digital animation we see everywhere today. L enjoys getting paint on her hands, and she hopes to continue doing so for the foreseeable future.
"I was first captivated by animation when I saw Aardman's Wallace and Gromit at the age of 6. Stop motion has always fascinated me because of its hands-on process that brings physical objects to life. I started making mechanical stop-motion puppets with Kindred Gottlieb and Abira Ali at Wisdom Arts Laboratory in Pasadena, California in 2014. When I moved to Brooklyn in 2024, I was surprised at the interest in hand puppets amongst film students at my school. I began to use some of my engineering knowledge to simplify my designs for puppets that could be brought to life in real time on a film camera instead of in an animated format. In trying to source most of my materials from the street or the trash, I have grown an appreciation for cardboard and its often overlooked versatility as a material. I have enjoyed exploring this plentiful medium and the movement that it allows. Here are 3 primarily cardboard puppets that I have worked on throughout the past year."
